## Verified facts

Checked against Proton Mail's own documentation on 2026-08-19. Fields absent below are ones Proton Mail does not document, not ones we assumed.

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Reset starts at | https://account.proton.me/reset-password |
| Reset by email | yes |
| Reset by phone | yes |
| The email contains | a code |

## Steps

1. **Open Proton Mail's password reset page** at https://account.proton.me/reset-password. This is where the "Forgot password?" link on the sign-in screen leads.
2. **Enter the email address or phone number on the account.** If you are not sure which address that is, search your inboxes for mail from proton.me; the inbox holding those messages is the account email.
3. **Enter the verification code** Proton Mail emails you.
4. **Choose a strong new password.** 16+ random characters, and never one used anywhere else.
5. **Store it somewhere sealed**: a password manager or encrypted vault, not a note and not a screenshot.

## Common problems

- **Password reset via SMS or email recovery may lock access to encrypted data.** If you reset your password using email or SMS recovery, you may not be able to access your encrypted data once you regain account access. A data recovery method must be set up beforehand to unlock this data. (https://proton.me/support/recover-encrypted-messages-files)
- **Signed-in password reset requires 72-hour wait without additional recovery methods.** If using only signed-in reset with no other password reset method enabled, there is a mandatory 72-hour waiting period before password change is allowed. (https://proton.me/support/signed-in-reset)
- **Recovery methods can only be used once and must be regenerated.** Some recovery options can be used only once. After recovery, users must regenerate outdated recovery methods before they can be used again. (https://proton.me/support/recover-encrypted-messages-files)

## Doing it automatically

Repass connects to Gmail once, finds the accounts you have, and runs this flow for you in your own browser. Passwords are generated on your device and encrypted before they are stored; Repass also holds a key that can unwrap the vault, so signing in is enough to open it. It pauses and hands over when a site asks for a CAPTCHA or a code.
