## Verified facts

Checked against E*TRADE's own documentation on 2026-08-20. Fields absent below are ones E*TRADE does not document, not ones we assumed.

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Reset starts at | https://us.etrade.com/etx/user/resetpassword |
| Reset by email | yes |
| The email contains | a link |

## Steps

1. **Open E*TRADE's password reset page** at https://us.etrade.com/etx/user/resetpassword. This is where the "Forgot password?" link on the sign-in screen leads.
2. **Enter the email address on the account.** If you are not sure which address that is, search your inboxes for mail from etrade.com; the inbox holding those messages is the account email.
3. **Open the reset email and follow its link.** Links are single-use and short-lived; if nothing arrives in a few minutes, check spam and confirm the address.
4. **Choose a strong new password.** 16+ random characters, and never one used anywhere else.
5. **Store it somewhere sealed**: a password manager or encrypted vault, not a note and not a screenshot.

## Common problems

- **New password must differ from username and previous password.** The new password chosen during reset must be different from both the username and the old password that is being replaced. (https://us.etrade.com/security-center/)
- **Password requirements include uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters allowed.** Passwords must contain a combination of numbers, uppercase characters, and lowercase characters; special characters are also allowed. Passwords should not contain names, common words, or numerical sequences. (https://us.etrade.com/security-center/)

## Doing it automatically

Repass connects to Gmail once, finds the accounts you have, and runs this flow for you in your own browser. Passwords are generated on your device and encrypted before they are stored; Repass also holds a key that can unwrap the vault, so signing in is enough to open it. It pauses and hands over when a site asks for a CAPTCHA or a code.
