## Verified facts

Checked against 1Password's own documentation on 2026-08-19. Fields absent below are ones 1Password does not document, not ones we assumed.

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Reset starts at | https://start.1password.com/recover/request |
| Reset by email | yes |
| Reset by phone | no |
| The email contains | a code |
| Username accepted | yes |
| Old password required | no |

## Steps

1. **Open 1Password's password reset page** at https://start.1password.com/recover/request. This is where the "Forgot password?" link on the sign-in screen leads.
2. **Enter the email address on the account.** 1Password also accepts the username. If you are not sure which address that is, search your inboxes for mail from 1password.eu; the inbox holding those messages is the account email.
3. **Enter the verification code** 1Password emails you.
4. **Choose a strong new password.** 16+ random characters, and never one used anywhere else.
5. **Store it somewhere sealed**: a password manager or encrypted vault, not a note and not a screenshot.

## Common problems

- **1Password cannot reset forgotten account password - recovery via email only.** Because vaults are encrypted on your devices and 1Password's servers never see the keys, those servers cannot reset your password. "No one can reset your password." Account recovery requires access to the email address associated with your account to verify identity and request a recovery code or family/team administrator recovery. (https://support.1password.com/forgot-account-password/)
- **Recovery code is essential for individual and family accounts without family organizer.** For individual and family accounts without a family organizer, a pre-generated recovery code is the only means to regain access if you forget your password. Recovery codes are optional but critical for account security and recovery options. (https://support.1password.com/recovery-codes/)
- **Recovery process requires new Secret Key and password creation.** When you recover your account through any method (recovery code, family organizer, or administrator), you receive a new Secret Key and must create a new account password. You must re-sign in on all devices after recovery is complete. (https://support.1password.com/after-recovery/)
- **Two-factor authentication persists after recovery via recovery code.** If you previously enabled 2FA, it will remain turned on after recovery via recovery code. However, recovery initiated by family or team administrators resets 2FA. (https://support.1password.com/recovery-codes/)

## Doing it automatically

Repass connects to Gmail once, finds the accounts you have, and runs this flow for you in your own browser. Passwords are generated on your device and encrypted before they are stored; Repass also holds a key that can unwrap the vault, so signing in is enough to open it. It pauses and hands over when a site asks for a CAPTCHA or a code.
